How to Build a 30-Day Emergency Food Supply
Share
A 30-day food supply sounds overwhelming, but it's simpler than you think when you break it down methodically.
Step 1: Calculate Your Needs
Plan for 2–3 meals per person per day. For a household of 2, that's roughly 120–180 meal servings for 30 days. Freeze-dried meals simplify this — each pouch is typically 1–2 servings.
Step 2: Build Variety
Eating the same thing for 30 days is miserable. Plan categories:
- Comfort pastas: Alfredo, mac and cheese, mushroom cream
- Rice-based meals: Fried rice, rice and beans
- Breakfast: Oatmeal, granola, freeze-dried fruit
- Snacks: Nuts, dried fruit, energy bars
- Drinks: Coffee, tea, electrolyte mixes
Step 3: Don't Forget Water
Freeze-dried meals need water to rehydrate. Store 1 gallon per person per day minimum. For 2 people over 30 days, that's 60 gallons. Consider a water filter as backup.
Step 4: Choose Your Storage Method
Original sealed pouches work well for most timelines. For maximum longevity, Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers inside food-grade buckets are the gold standard.
Step 5: Set Up Rotation
Label everything with purchase dates. Use oldest meals first. Replace what you eat. Your emergency supply should be a living system, not a forgotten box in the basement.
Sample 7-Day Rotation (2 people)
| Day | Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | Oatmeal | Mac N' Cheese | Roasted Garlic Alfredo |
| Tue | Granola + fruit | Creamy Mushroom Pasta | Rice & beans |
| Wed | Oatmeal | Roasted Garlic Alfredo | Mac N' Cheese |
| Thu | Granola + fruit | Rice dish | Creamy Mushroom Pasta |
| Fri | Oatmeal | Mac N' Cheese | Roasted Garlic Alfredo |
| Sat | Granola + fruit | Creamy Mushroom Pasta | Rice & beans |
| Sun | Oatmeal | Roasted Garlic Alfredo | Mac N' Cheese |
Repeat and adjust to taste. The point is: you eat well even when things go wrong.
